About Camb From Nothing

Never Forgotten.

Recognizing that Cambodian Americans are among the poorest populations in the United States, Niza Oun-Nguyen believes that it is her responsibility to inspire and motivate people like herself to overcome the odds and bring their dreams to life. Like many Cambodians , Niza grew up in a humble home with little resources and support.  She is the oldest of four children and daughter of Cambodian refugees who survived the Khmer Rouge regime. Niza recognizes that the repercussions of the Khmer Rouge regime still linger today and affect Cambodian families everywhere. Nearly 20 percent of Cambodians in the US live in poverty and the rates are even higher in other countries. The low educational attainment rate for Cambodian-Americans stagnates our social mobility and perpetuates the cycle of poverty and violence for younger generations. At a time when only 50 percent of US-born Cambodian Americans earn a high school diploma, Niza knows that she has her work cut out for her but refuses to quit. She believes that by sharing our stories, we can inspire and empower each other to break the cycle of poverty and strengthen our community.
